:Embedded System Security: Attacks, Impacts and Defenses

Our research explores different facets of the security of embedded systems. To develop a better understanding of the security problems affecting embedded devices we can focus, at first, on the study of attacks and impacts. To this end, we explored a consumer biometric three factor authentication device, and the security of industrial robots controllers, very complex systems involving multiple embedded components. Discovering novel vulnerabilities and classes of vulnerabilities is a first step in trying to secure existing, off-the-shelf embedded systems. A long-term strategy is instead looking into defense methods, to help mitigate or resolve security problems: we developed an ARM TrustZone based protection for consumer devices, and envision employing this very same technology to help securing human-robot interaction interfaces. The conclusive part of our research deals with developing tools and methods to simplify and automate tasks that we encountered when researching for vulnerabilities and attacks.
