:Geosynchronous SAR: concepts and applicationsAbstract:
Synthetic aperture radars are every day more and more crucial in the scenario of Earth Observation (EO). One of the possible next generation SAR system is the so-called Geosynchronous SAR which has the excellent performances of less than one day revisit and hundreds of kilometres of coverage.One of the fields that will receive the highest benefits from such a system is meteorology and, more in general, weather forecasting: it’s well known that pressure, temperature and humidity along the geometrical path between the satellite and ground affect the refractive index inducing in this way an optical path. Since SAR systems are coherent, meaning that they can measure not only the amplitude but also the phase of the backscattered signal, and from the phase information it’s possible to generate maps of Atmospheric Phase (AP) that can be ingested by Numerical Weather Prediction Models (NWPM).Such a low revisit time will limit temporal decorrelation in interferograms and this, in turn, allows the generation of high precision water vapour maps.The coarse resolution of a possible GeoSAR will not be a problem since such NWPM are used to ingest data unregularly sampled or with tens of kilometres of resolution.Weather forecast is not the only field where a GeoSAR would be helpful: large scale change detection can be performed with unprecedent repeat frequency thanks to the extremely low temporal baseline between two repeated geometries.These products may be of interest for fast response to natural hazards such as earthquakes, floods and has already be used successfully to detect changes in urban and rural environment using the constellation of ESA satellites Sentinel-1.Objective of my research project is to develop and implement algorithms that are able to extract information from a SAR complex image and that can be used in the context of a future Geosynchronous SAR mission.
