The theme of the research is embedded in the context of INSERT, an European project aiming to the realization of a MRI/SPECT system for simultaneous functional and anatomical brain imaging. The contribution I am determinate to bring to this project is the design, development and optimization of a gamma-ray detector based on Anger Camera architecture, with scintillation crystal and photo-detecting matrix.
The challenging aspect of the study is represented by the main specifications related to the detector: it should satisfy requirements typical of an imaging system (quality of the image) and also demonstrate good performance as spectroscopy system.
The convergence of the two characteristics in the detection system will provide the SPECT with an instrument with both good spatial resolution and discrimination capability among different radiotracers, allowing multimodal imaging.
