Deep-rooted in the context of medical and nuclear electronics, my research concerns the development of innovative circuits for ionizing radiation detection. I am involved in INSERT, a european project aiming to the realization of a MRI/SPECT system for simultaneous functional and anatomical brain imaging. My current main activity consists in the design of a front-end ASIC for energy measurement of the gamma-photons generated in the SPECT system. The chip will perform analog conditioning and digital acquisition of the current signal coming from a SiPM detector, a semiconductor photomultiplier foreseen to be a successor of PMT, thanks to the low voltages needed for operation and its immunity to magnetic fields. Achievement of high resolution time measurement is also addressed, with a view to a possible PET application. My research activity also regards the development of low-noise high-rate architectures for X-ray detection.
