Modelling and characterization of Partial Discharge phenomena in polymeric materials for Galvanic Isolation

Abstract:
The possibility of exploiting polymer dielectrics for the implementation of devices for galvanic isolation represents an interesting alternative to classical approaches based on inorganic materials. However, the reliability of such materials must be thoroughly assessed. One of the failure modes of such dielectrics is the Partial Discharge (PD), connected to vacancies inside the dielectric. The research activity will be focused on studying the PD phenomenon from an experimental and numerical viewpoint, in order to develop appropriate extrapolation models that could allow to infer the device lifetime from very fast PD tests, greatly accelerating the test time and reducing its complexity.
