Chatbots for Education: Design and Technology for Scalable, Configurable, and Adaptive Framework
This paper is about an original approach for chatbots in education. Highly “customisable” chatbots are deployed as “tutors” to support learners, both in a formal education setting or for individual learning. A strong separation between content and conversation design, high customisation (for content and conversation), and the empowerment of non-technical actors (including authors, publishers, teachers, and students), to be direct actors in the production process, are important contributions, as far learning is concerned, contributions on the technical side include an original architecture and large use of configuration capabilities. These capabilities allow for a low cost of creation/deployment and are the basis for customization features. A large experiment (involving teachers and students) has shown the approach's viability and potential effectiveness.
