Major Research topic:
SPAD-based instrumentation for single-photon timing and counting applications
Abstract:
My research aims at investigating the numerous applications in which SPADs can bring significant advantages over other technologies. The core of my Ph.D. project is the development of devices for both time-resolved single-photon measurements in photon-starving applications and high-photon rate scenarios. In particular, each developed system has been tailored for the specific application exploiting the partition of on-chip processing and off-chip elaboration. Depending on the specific application, the design has been based either on FPGA or microcontrollers. These systems have found applications in different fields. For example, in microscopy SPAD cameras can provide space and time-resolved images and video allowing also the detection of coincidences. This information enables the user to exploit quantum phenomena, like entanglement and superposition of states, to reach super-sensitivity with low input light power and large field-of-view.
