Mixed Signals Generic Testing in Photonic Integration
Abstract:
Automation and photonics are two worlds that are coming closer to each other. Real-time monitoring and control of a photonic integrated circuit (either active or passive) is crucial to achieve the best performance and, more in general, to make them working properly, in line with the specifications. This requires a multi-physical approach, found in the development of testing and packaging techniques, which is the most urgent need in integrated photonics. Electronics, thermodynamics, computer science cooperate to achieve the highest degree of automation, as commonly happens in other fields of engineering. So, the aim of this research project is investigation of new techniques for characterization and control of complex Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs). Moreover, design and possible implementation of advanced industrial system for parallel testing at device and/or wafer level are indeed crucial for this research path. Speed, reliability and high scalabilty are main requirements of these automated systems.
