SAR Absolute Phase Estimation and Calibration

Abstract:
SAR backscatter phase is affected by several phenomena, which should be untangled to be interpreted for different applications like subsidence monitoring, weather prediction, etc. In particular, the following components are of interest:
1. Atmospheric Phase Screen (APS), caused by the water-vapor content of the tropospheric layer
2. Ionospheric phase screen, related to the ionized layer at the upper part of the atmosphere
3. Deformation
4. Orbital residual
For most of the above, the current state-of-the-art builds on Permanent Scatterers (PS), targets that are very stable over time. PS-based techniques are highly effective, but they rely on the dense distribution of human-made targets and are not always applicable. My target is to explore the combination of PS with Distributed targets (DS), which show moderate/low stability, to allow reliable monitoring in rural areas. A sub-goal is to obtain an efficient code considering a wide-scale analysis.
