Certain physical effects that influence optical signal quality are very hard to model (e.g., parameters of optical amplifiers are frequency- and input-power- dependent). State-of-the-art approach imposes high optical margins that guarantee connection availability even for the “worst-case” values of these uncertain parameters. Instead, in our research, we aim at reducing optical margins by estimating the probability distribution of Quality of Transmission (QoT) metric and integrating it into a network planning framework, to set margins according to the required connection availability. This framework will then be extended to perform QoT-aware network re-optimization.
