Major Research topic:
3D Printing of materials of relevance for the microelectronic industry

Abstract:
Additive manufacturing technologies (more popularly called 3D printing) are currently gaining interest in electronic circuits fabrication. These techniques allow high-throughput production at low cost, by avoiding the typical toxic wastes production of conventional electronic manufacturing technologies and by allowing the realization of unusual geometries with respect to the current standard ones. By paying attention on the employed materials and on the functionalization of the substrates the electrical performance of these printed devices are increasing, whereas they are characterized by other types of interesting performances in term of bendability, flexibility in components integration and void spaces implementation not feasible using conventional subtractive methods. The aim of this Ph.D. project is to investigate on 3D inkjet printing of innovative electronic components to be eventually integrated in with standard microelectronics products. Conductive inks will be employed and micrometer components will be manufactured according to printing device’s geometrical resolution.
