Major Research topic:
Devices and circuits for in-memory computing

Abstract:
The research project is focused on the study and development of devices and systems for in-memory computing. In particular, the research on device-level will be intrinsically interlaced with the development of systems to implement new computing paradigms.However, new paradigms require new technologies.

In this project, the focus is on resistive switching devices. In fact, they have demonstrated the ability to implement new computational functions and great potential for technological integration.At the system level then, the project will deal with creating those brain-inspired computing architectures, where computation and storage take place in the same place, thus being able to overcome the Von Neumann bottleneck.

On the device side, the activities carried out will be:
;
    ;
  • Modeling of properties of materials in order to explore exotic behaviors.
  • ;
  • Modeling of physics and statistics in order to develop reliable models to simulate and design higher level systems.
  • ;
  • Investigation of new physics-based computational functions for the realization of new systems.
  • ;
; On the system side, the activities carried out will be: ;
    ;
  • Implementation of the results obtained from the feedback on the device-level study
  • ;
  • Realization and hardware-level demonstration of in-memory and neuromorphic computing systems.
  • ;
; In particular, the activity will focus on systems for spatiotemporal recognition by exploiting the analogy of what happens in the brain: short-time and long-time dynamic plasticity. The realization of these systems opens the doors to countless applications in the most varied fields, from pure statistical signal processing to biomedical systems.
